HIGH WEALD DECORATIVE &FINE ARTS SOCIETY (HWDFAS), in BENENDEN was started in 1997. It has become a very popular and friendly Society attracting members from a wide area stretching from Staplehurst to Rye and including all the High Weald towns and villages.
Lectures: Our annual programme, set out on the appropriate page, includes a wide variety of subjects all connected with fine and decorative art. Some of our lectures refer to anniversaries of great artists, while some anticipate forthcoming exhibitions to be held in London. The majority, however, can be described as an eclectic mix. From personal experience, the lecture with the least promising title often turns out to be the most fascinating.
Study Days (Days of Special Interest) usually involve three lectures in one day offering a more detailed study of a subject. Recent topics have included Clocks & Watches, Church Architecture, Portrait Painting and Glassware. Study Days in 2010 will be on Sir Edwin Lutyens and Iran. These days are well worth attending and also give another opportunity to get to know fellow members.
Day Trips are organised to London or places of interest in the South East. It is a great treat to be led by expert guides spending a day discovering stately homes, castles or gardens and then to be chauffered back to Cranbrook in a comfortable bus.
Longer Trips take place each year to places of interest, either abroad or the UK. Memorable trips have included St. Petersburg in the snow, the Baltic States and the Palaces of the Veneto. We have also travelled around the UK, amongst others, to Liverpool, Norfolk and Cardiff. 2010 sees a group of us visiting the many stately homes of Northamptonshire. Details of our trips can again be found on the relevant pages.
Theatre Trips. Heather Parker organises reasonably-priced trips to plays, musicals, opera and the ballet in London. In October they were extremely lucky to see Cosi Fan Tutte at Glyndebourne.
Lectures take place on the fourth Tuesday of each month from September to June at 10.45 in Benenden Village Hall, TN17 4DY. Coffee is served from 10-10.30. Please be seated for announcements by 10.40.
Guests. Members may bring up to two guests a year at a cost of £6.00 per lecture. The Society has 299 members and a long waiting list. Those on the waiting list can attend four lectures a year at a cost of £6.00 per lecture.
