On Wednesday 12th November 2008 members of Knole DFAS visited Apsley House and Wellington Arch.
On
arrival at Wellington Arch, we were welcomed by the guide, Mr Philip
Godfrey-Knight, who took us straight up to the viewing balconies at the
top of the Arch. Just below the plinth supporting the bronze quadriga
we had a clear panoramic view of the Royal Parks, Constitution Hill and
Piccadilly. Whilst on the balcony we had an exciting moment when the
Queen passed through the Arch beneath us in the royal car with
motorbike escorts!
Then
right on schedule at 11.40 am we enjoyed the spectacle of the Household
Cavalry in full regalia riding through the Arch. After descending from
the balconies, the guide gave us an informative talk of the Arch’s
history while we enjoyed coffee and biscuits. He also informed us of
the Blue Plaque historical marker scheme managed by English Heritage.
After lunch in nearby Shepherd Market we visited Apsley House. We were guided through the State Rooms with their many art treasures and memorabilia, including an original pair of Wellington Boots!
