VISIT to Romney Marsh Churches Booking is now open

Thursday 09 September 2010

The fourteen still active medieval churches of Romney Marsh include some of the prettiest in England, each with its own distinctive charm and interest.  These churches are now under the care of the Romney Marsh Historic Churches Trust (RMHCT) whose purpose is the preservation and maintenance of the fabric of the buildings.

Our excursion will include visits to four churches: St Thomas Becket, Fairfield and St Augustine, Brookland during the morning; St Clement, Old Romney and St Nicholas, New Romney during the afternoon.  However, we will start by calling in for tea/coffee and biscuits at The Royal Oak in Brookland  The Royal Oak is a typical old country inn and is adjacent to St Augustine's Church.  We will be returning there for an optional buffet ploughman's lunch at a cost of £7.25 pp.

Dr John Woodward, one of our members and an avid supporter of RMHCT, has kindly offered to provide a brief introduction on arrival at each of the churches.  (John has published a very attractive book Reflections on Romney Marsh Churches in Pictures and Verse, available in local bookshops.)

At the end of our visit we are invited to enjoy tea and biscuits in St Nicholas, New Romney before departing homewards (voluntary contributions towards the cost of this will be invited).

Note that the Fairfield church involves a short walk (200-300 yards) over uneven ground.  Visitors should therefore wear stout shoes.

Cost: £22 (includes coach fare, donation to RMHCT, morning coffee/tea and driver's tip); lunch - £7.25
